Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I’m at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it’s gonna take
To find dignity

Dignity

Search for dignity is search for justification.

The entire song reflects many areas of effort to self-justify. It is happening all around us.

The problem is people need justification before God whose Spirit is everywhere, and their consciences are unsatisfied. Until reconciliation takes place with God, everyone will try to acquire this conscience-justification in what they do. It doesn't matter if it's a quest, a career, a high level of education, self-reliance, or money. Self-justification is the goal, whether they know it or not.

Only when our consciences are cleansed and justified by the blood and death of God's Son on the cross, can we cease the vain search for our own justification before God; our own dignity in life. The reason being that we have been declared justified or righteous by God himself. We are set free in his amazing love and grace, unmerited favor. We are free to see true dignity in those created in God's image and likeness and reach out to them. We are free to live for the One who died and rose again and not for ourselves. The search for justification, for dignity . . . has ended.

THE RECORD

Where can I go to escape your spirit?
Where can I flee to escape your presence?

If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there.
If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be.
If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn,
and settle down on the other side of the sea,
even there your hand would guide me,
your right hand would grab hold of me.

Psalm 139:7-10

But if they had stood in my inner circle,
they would have proclaimed my message to my people.
They would have caused my people to turn from their wicked ways
and stop doing the evil things they are doing.
Do you people think that I am some local deity
and not
the transcendent God?” the Lord asks.
“Do you really think anyone can hide himself
where I cannot see him?” the Lord asks.
“Do you not know that I am everywhere?”
the Lord asks.

Jeremiah 23:22-24

For there is no partiality with God. For all who have sinned apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous before God, but those who do the law will be declared righteous. For whenever the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things required by the law, these who do not have the law are a law to themselves. They show that the work of the law is written in their hearts,
as their conscience bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or else defend them, on the day when God will judge the secrets of human hearts, according to my gospel through Christ Jesus.

Romans 2:11-16

He did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God. He was fully convinced that what God promised he was also able to do. So indeed
it was credited to Abraham as righteousness. But the statement it was credited to him was not written only for Abraham’s sake, but also for our sake, to whom it will be credited, those who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was given over because of our transgressions and was raised for the sake of our justification.

Romans 4:20-25

Therefore, since we have been
declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

So then
those who believe are blessed along with Abraham the believer. For all who rely on doing the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not keep on doing everything written in the book of the law.” Now it is clear no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous one will live by faith. But the law is not based on faith, but the one who does the works of the law will live by them. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us (because it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”) in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

Galatians 3:9-14

In your teaching show integrity, dignity, and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us.
